What is a Commitment Ceremony?

A commitment ceremony is similar to a wedding in some ways as it is a public declaration of love and commitment between two consenting individuals. The difference lies in the fact that a commitment ceremony does not have the legal binding a marriage certificate provides. Hence, some couples opt for a commitment ceremony instead of a wedding, especially if they are not legally allowed to marry in their state or have personal reasons for not wanting to get married.

​Commitment ceremonies can even look the same as legally binding weddings, but at no point does the couple go off to sign paperwork and make the marriage legal by government standards. You might have attended a wedding ceremony in the past that was actually a commitment ceremony, and you didn’t even know it!

​A commitment ceremony is when two people commit their lives to one another. It is similar to a wedding and can include wedding traditions, but it does not result in a legally binding marriage.
