Commitments

Commitment ceremonies
mean different things
 to different people!

What is a Commitment Ceremony?

A commitment ceremony is similar to a wedding in some ways as it is a public declaration of love and commitment between two consenting individuals. The difference lies in the fact that a commitment ceremony does not have the legal binding that a marriage certificate provides. Therefore, some couples opt for a commitment ceremony instead of a wedding, especially if they are not legally allowed to marry in their state or have personal reasons for not wanting to get married.

Commitment ceremonies can even look the same as legally binding weddings, but at no point does the couple go off to sign paperwork and make the marriage legal by government standards. You might have attended a wedding ceremony in the past that was actually a commitment ceremony, and you didn’t even know it!

Commitment ceremonies mean different things
 to different people!

A commitment ceremony is when two people commit their lives to one another. It is similar to a wedding and can include wedding traditions, but it does not result in a legally binding marriage.
  • a commitment ceremony can look just like a wedding, complete with church, wedding gown and hundreds of guests, with no marriage license OR
  • the most alternative event imaginable, a ritual to bless your relationship, OR
  • a big party or huge bash with friends and relatives to celebrate your love
  • an intimate exchange between you and your partner
  • allows couples to make a commitment to one another
  • a family rite of passage
  • to strengthen the bonds between parents and children in a new unmarried step-family

Call it a Commitment Ceremony, a Wedding,
a Ceremony of Union, or anything else you prefer!

We know rituals and ceremonies are important events in the lives of individuals, partners and families!  When we talk about a commitment ceremony, we mean an event that does not involve laws or government agencies in any way; there's no license or certificate and the participants legal status does not change.

What's included in a Commitment Ceremony?

In addition to exchanging vows, a commitment ceremony can also include other elements such as music, poetry readings, and a unity ceremony. A unity ceremony is a symbolic gesture that represents the couple’s commitment to each other and their union.
